Meijer Seeking General Merchandise Retail Leaders in Grand Rapids Area in Grand Rapids, Michigan

Currently, Meijer is looking for a General Merchandise Line Leader . In this role with Meijer you will plan, direct, and supervise Team Leaders and Team Members in the day to day operations of the General Merchandise area. You are responsible to develop and implement strategies to improve customer service, drive store sales and increase profitability. As a Line Leader you will work to ensure customer needs are met, complaints are resolved effectively and efficiently and service is quick and efficient. You will also ensure that all products and displays are merchandised effectively to maximize sales and profitability. You will forecast staffing needs and develop recruiting strategy to provide optimal staffing in all areas of the General Merchandise Line. You are also responsible for the selection, training/development, and performance management of the General Merchandise Team Leaders and Softlines Team Leader.

Key Deliverables:

  • Supervise the execution of the Merchandising plan

  • Responsible for P&L, achieving sales, labor and margin plans for the department

  • Implements Corporate processes to achieve goals including shrink, margin, profit, sales, labor

  • Model exceptional, fast and friendly customer service

  • Ensure the GM team is property hired, staffed and thoroughly trained in all aspects of their jobs and have completed all required training

  • Mentor and coach the General Merchandise Team Members to ensure customer service and sales goals are exceeded and the General Merchandise area is maintained to Meijer standards

  • Promotes succession planning by providing career paths, identifying development needs for the General Merchandise team

  • Review and take action on Customer Survey and customer feedback from

  • Spending 80% of time on sales floor communicating with customers and team members to ensure exceptional service is being delivered

  • Reviews sales goals, supply costs, stock loss/shrink results and goals

  • Communicates the Meijer Friendly Initiative in all team meetings and conversations

  • Inventory preparation of the General Merchandise Sales Floor and Backroom

  • Supervises the General Merchandise Team

  • Promotes a safe work environment throughout the line

  • Reliable and consistent attendance required

  • Other daily tasks as required


  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience

  • At least 6 years of related experience in the retail industry

  • Demonstrated communication skills

  • Ability to resolve conflict and by addressing root cause issues

  • Ability to analyze financial and statistical information and use that information to make informed decisions

  • Demonstrated ability to teach suggestive selling

  • Demonstrated ability to mentor team members in all areas of the organization

  • Duty trained

Must be able to work evenings and weekends
