Description/Distinguishing Features

This position performs technical work in the rehabilitation and testing of large-diameter potable wells; installation and repair of pumps and motors, and the installation of monitoring wells; does related work as required.

An employee in this class performs difficult technical work in evaluating water quality and quantity; repairing and installing pumps; well disinfection; training water operations and maintenance staff; and may assist contractors with the drilling and casing of wells and associated work. General assignments are received from the Supervisor in charge, but independent judgment is required in many instances. Supervision may be exercised over other workers.

Examples of Duties

  • Developing maintenance activities including both preventive and corrective maintenance methodologies of the potable water well asset(s) using the City's Computer Maintenance and Management System, Lucity. This includes definition of maintenance specifications and schedules, maintenance execution procedures, procedures for missed maintenance, and the capture and utilization of maintenance inspection and measurement results.
  • Ensuring that potable water well asset(s) operate for a defined period based on manufacturer's operation and maintenance recommendations and lifecycle delivery intentions.
  • Monitors performance of all wells in the Kalamazoo water system and recommends schedules for periodic well, pump and motor maintenance. 
  • Transports to and sets up drilling rig and equipment at well site. 
  • Transports to and unloads various rehabilitation supplies to and from well site.
  • Operates cable tool drilling rig, auto-surge equipment and pump hoist as needed.
  • Drilling, construction, installation, and development of monitoring wells; records geological strata by observing and classifying earth sample.
  • Installs and repairs pumps, motors, and controls.
  • Connects well to water supply intake mains. 
  • Rehabilitates and tests existing wells for water quality and quantity. 
  • Designs and builds special use tools and equipment. 
  • May supervise the installation of water mains within wellfields. 
  • Completes monitoring well drilling and abandonment logs. 
  • Participates in on-the-job training of other employees.
  • Performs other related duties, as assigned.
