Purpose of the Role

The Integration and Laboratories Manager will lead a team, with ownership of the Global Technical Centres in Menstrie, Dublin and Panama to enable Diageo’s strategic ambitions in Technical Equity and transformational, industry-leading research. The role will report to the Science & Technology Director and will be a member of the S&T Leadership Team. Location of the role holder will ideally be Menstrie or Dublin.

The scope of the role holder will include (not limited to):

  • Accountability for developing and delivering a portfolio for:

  • Industry leading laboratory “Centres of Excellence” for the full Diageo portfolio in chemical, microbiological, sensory, and packaging, analytics.

  • Expert analytical services for brand technical equity, innovation, material assessments, global business support, and strategic research and development.

  • Horizon scanning to develop the future strategy of the Global Technical Centres aligned to the highest standards across the industry, including new technology and product development, and implemented in uniform standards globally.

  • Development and active collaboration across an extensive network of external partners, including but not limited to industry bodies, academic institutions, suppliers, and expert consultants to provide knowledge and expertise to lead Diageo’s strategic ambitions.

Key Accountabilities

  • Provide effective leadership to a team of analytical, microbiological, and packaging experts, taking accountability for the business delivery and R&D agenda.

  • Development and delivery of global technical standards for best-in-class analytical methodologies, working standards and research frameworks to ensure the quality and integrity of our portfolio across own- and third-party partner sites.

  • Develop new opportunities and innovative technologies across chemical, microbiological, sensory, and packaging analytics, including relevant new product/process development and design.

  • Define standards for testing in new areas as they emerge, including compounds of concern, raw materials, pack materials, and new technologies.

  • Develop and deliver due diligence (technical and compliance) analysis and expert advice for the portfolio across third party operators, suppliers, mergers, and acquisitions.

  • Align the strategy with key internal and external collaborators and ensure effective delivery and adherence to Diageo governance and risk management standards.

  • Develop, take ownership of, and embed Technical Centre Strategy standards and codify standard processes.

Horizon scanning to develop and deliver a best-in-class Global Technical Centres strategy and roadmap, including R&D and digital transformation, with internal and external benchmarking as appropriate.

Skills and Experience Required

  • Technical professional who has developed within their area of expertise and has evidence of delivering business value.

  • PhD and Degree in a Scientific field or Chemical Engineering (ideally allied to the drinks industry) or equivalent relevant qualifications and experience.

  • 5 years’ experience in a relevant industry in a technical or research role, ideally including practical experience of brewing and/or distilling.

  • Proven team leadership skills, with experience of developing successful teams.

  • Must be a great team player with a strong work ethic and ability to lead by example.

  • Track record of strategy development and execution in large-scale, complex operations.

  • Strong stakeholder engagement skills to build and establish strong networks of relationships at all levels, internally and externally.

  • Skilled communicator, with good interpersonal and influencing skills.

  • High energy, curious to learn and develop, and able to engage and inspire team members and collaborators.

  • Cross functional experience beneficial with strong supplier and procurement knowledge

  • Thought leadership/ strategic vision/ externally connected/ future orientated.
