Meijer Quality Assurance Supervisor - Food Distribution Center in Newport, Michigan
Currently, Meijer is looking for a Quality Assurance Supervisor, Distribution. This position is responsible for ensuring that all Meat, Seafood and Fresh Produce distributed within our supply chain meets or exceeds Meijer quality standards and regulatory grading requirements; by working collaboratively with the Buying Office, through the inspection of incoming and outbound loads at the distribution facility, working with warehouse staff on product rotation, and creating weekly recaps and period end assessment reports. Trains, coaches and audits DF audit teams in execution of inspection SOPs (Standard Operating Procedures). This position also provide supervisory leadership for select Quality Assurance –Fresh team members; as assigned. Will provide coverage and/or remote assistance in support of other DF Quality Assurance Supervisors from other DFs during periods of vacation or leaves of absence.
Oversees training and standardization of assigned Quality Assurance Team Members while leading communication with DF leadership teams (i.e. Complex Director, Unit Directors, etc.).
Oversee and manage assigned DF Quality Assurance – Fresh team members as related to time-off, training, quality evaluations, metric reporting, while influencing a positive culture of quality with Meijer DF staff and leadership.
Interviews, hires, leads and supervises Quality Assurance team members; as assigned. Records and delivers coaching and disciplinary action to team members as necessary.
Maintains the quality and food safety manuals to assure that all policies and procedures are current and compliant with corporate and regulatory requirements.
Coordinates and maintains team work schedules and vacation. Updates activities in MIDS.
Keep Leadership and the buying team informed through various reporting on incoming product quality, rejections, cGMP and food safety metrics.
Trains and coaches DF Auditors on proper inspection processes. Audits DF auditors on inspection SOPs.
Reviews all fresh product quality issues observed by DF auditors and makes the decision either to accept or reject fresh product based upon USDA and Meijer standards. Partners with the Meat and Produce Buying Teams to address product quality concerns that may require rejection.
Inspects and evaluates all inbound produce, meat and seafood loads. Ensures that fresh commodities meet or exceed Meijer specifications and standards for quality and temperature control, as well as USDA requirements for quality.
Ensure that the banana specifications are met on a daily basis prior to shipments leaving the DFs.
Utilizes product quality test equipment to verify fresh product meets minimum government requirements and Meijer specifications. Reports inspection observations to DF Leadership; helps implement, develop and facilitate corrective actions in partnership with DF leaders.
Audits the fresh DF in accordance with FDA cGMP guidelines, the DF Food Safety Plan as it pertains to the Preventative Control Rule, and the DF Seafood HACCP plan. Identifies and communicates to auditors produce seasonal trends as related to quality. Performs recall effectiveness checks as required.
Develops collaborative and effective relationships with all levels of DF leadership and buying teams.
Provides quality assessments that analyze and compare fresh produce, meat and seafood supplier products against Meijer expectations and standards and reports findings to the buying team and DF Leadership.
Utilizes quality software programs to assist buying team in assessing potential supplier charge-backs for product that does not meet Meijer standards.
Subject matter expert regarding quality/grading concerns. Makes recommendation around quality/grading concerns including rejection of product, to the buying team. Works with First Assistant when additional review is required.

Bachelor Degree preferred; focus in Food Science or related discipline such as chemistry, biology or microbiology but will accept supervisory and quality assurance experience in lieu of a degree.
Minimum of 2 years of quality assurance supervisory experience, preferably in a Food Manufacturing or DF environment.
General knowledge/experience with microbiological, chemical and physical testing of food products/ingredients.
Proficient in Microsoft Word, Power Point and Excel.
USDA familiarity/knowledge preferred.
Ability to analyze data and information and make effective and timely decisions.
Ability to work under pressure and to react to situation with a strong sense of urgency

Quality Assurance is a 7 day operation and must be able to work on weekends and holidays or as needed
