We are seeking a talented and experienced Controller to lead the financial operations of our growing organization. Qualified applicants must live within commuting distance of Okemos, Michigan or be willing to relocate. 

The Controller plays a critical role in overseeing financial operations of our organization, ensuring accuracy, compliance, and efficiency in financial reporting and management. The Controller job involves managing accounting processes, analyzing financial data, and providing strategic recommendations to senior management. This candidate will be a team player/coach with a "roll-up-your-sleeves" style who is excited to build an accounting team within a rapidly growing company.

ROLES & RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Manage, build, and develop a high-functioning accounting team and improve business processes, and systems to support the strategic direction of a high-growth organization.
  • Maintain a documented system of accounting policies and procedures; implement a system of controls over accounting transactions to minimize risk.
  • Be able to perform "hands-on" accounting tasks, such as:
    • Running payroll, including filing payroll tax returns in multiple states.
    • Invoicing, payables, receivables, budgeting, and general ledger.
    • Filing personal property tax returns and maintaining fixed asset listings.
    • Producing periodic financial reports.
  • Recommend benchmarks that will be used to measure the company's performance.
  • Produce annual budgets and forecasts; report significant budget differences to management.
  • Provide financial analysis, with emphasis on capital investments, pricing decisions, and contract negotiations.
  • Work with an external accounting firm to ensure compliance with local, state, and federal government requirements.
  • Assisting in administration of property and cyber insurance.
  • Supervise and mentor accounting staff, fostering a culture of respect, collaboration, and accountability.
  • Assess financial risks and implement risk mitigation strategies to protect our organization's interests.
  • Lead or participate in special projects as assigned by senior leadership, such as system implementation, or other process improvements.

REQUIRED EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, KNOWLEDGE, & ABILITIES

  • Bachelor's degree in accounting, finance, or related field.
  • 5 to 7 years of progressive experience in accounting or finance roles, with 1 to 2 years in a supervisory or managerial capacity.
  • Proficiency in financial analysis, budgeting, and forecasting techniques.
  • Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written.
  • Excellent organization, attention to detail, and time management skills.
  • Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced, dynamic environment and manage multiple priorities simultaneously.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills.
  • Experience with QuickBooks accounting software.
  • A broad-minded business executive; able to communicate and execute with an eye for business case, ROI, "Big Picture" and long-term strategy.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with attention to detail and accuracy.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Certified Public Accountant or Certified Management Accountant.
  • Understanding of and ability to research state nexus rules as business grows into new markets.
  • Experience in technology industries.
