Title:  Data Abstractor - MODA/MiVDRS $22.64 - $29.50 / Posted Thru: 11-3-23

Location:  Remote/Virual - Must Live in Michigan

Purpose: Abstract data on unintentional and indeterminate manner drug-related deaths for the Michigan Violent Death Reporting System (MiVDRS) and Michigan Overdose Data to Action (MODA) surveillance system.

Duties and Responsibilities: Abstract case data from law enforcement and Medical Examiner case files for drug-related deaths occurring in counties across Michigan. Data, which occasionally can be graphic in nature, shall be abstracted into the National Violent Death Reporting System online database in a timely manner using established protocols, including the construction of brief incident narratives. Work with contacts at assigned data source agencies to establish and maintain data collection procedures and schedule when necessary. Maintain good working relationships with the other MiVDRS and MODA team members and staff of the agencies providing access to the incident case files. Follow all project data security and confidentiality procedures and protocols. Participate in required data abstraction trainings. Participate in all necessary evaluation and quality assurance activities. Participate in MiVDRS and MODA team meetings. Participate in all required trainings, including confidentiality and security trainings and sign oath of confidentiality. Always represent the best interests of MDHHS and MPHI. Other duties as assigned by the MiVDRS/MODA Mortality Program Director.

Qualifications/Requirements:

Education:  A bachelor's degree in any major required.

Experience: Minimum of two years professional experience.

Important Skills and Characteristics: Excellent and demonstrated written and oral communication skills; strong interpersonal skills; ability to work both independently and as part of a team; experience with data abstraction and/or data entry.

Work Environment and Physical Requirements: Standard office environment requires use of computer and fax, as well as the capability of communicating with other offices and agencies via telephone and electronic mail. Must have the ability to work at a computer and operate normal office equipment. Job may require moderate physical effort including lifting materials and equipment of <25# and involves viewing a CRT or VDT screen at least 75% of the time. Valid vehicle operator's license required. This position may be office, home or hybrid based. Occasional in-state travel for on-site abstraction, trainings and/or meetings will be required.
