The South Bend Empowerment Zone is a set of five schools in the South Bend Community School Corporation that serves roughly 2,200 PK-8 grade students on the West Side of South Bend . In terms of demographics, the Empowerment Zone is: 22% English Learners 18% Special Education Learners 84% Free/reduced lunch 12% White 7% Multiracial 39% Hispanic/Latino 41% Black/African-American The Empowerment Zone is dedicated to dramatically improving student achievement and doing whatever it takes to realize that goal. We work to ensure that traditionally underserved students receive the support and resources they need to be successful. Position Description The Dean of Instruction (DoI) will provide building-level instructional leadership to ensure high-quality instructional service schoolwide. The DoI will provide oversight of curricular implementation and instructional practices to ensure all students have routine and continuous access to grade-level, standards-driven instruction and supervise instructional programming and staff aligned to Empowerment Zone policy and best practices. Core Competencies The Dean of Instruction leads as a continuous learner, modeling reflecting on their own learning and development and will seek out ways to develop their own skill, knowledge and capacity. 2. The DoI has deep knowledge in highly-effective pedagogical practices as well as standards and district-adopted curriculum. The DoI demonstrates an understanding of a range of coaching approaches and how adults learn as well as have a facility in developing and maintaining relationships based on trust and respect to maximize teacher development and impact classroom practice. The DoI designs and implements strategic plans to work with both individual teachers as well as support the development of teacher groups/ professional learning communities. 5. The DoI demonstrates project management skills to ensure action plans, timelines and specific initiatives are implemented in a timely manner and as intended. The DoI collects, organizes and interprets data continuously to identify teacher needs, develop professional learning supports, and reallocate resources to best meet the needs of students. 7. The DoI is a collaborator, deeply committed to engaging with Zone leaders, other administrators and teacher leaders to ensure the transformation of student learning in the South Bend Empowerment Zone. Responsibilities Instructional Deputy Lead- The DoI will provide oversight of the use of grade-level curriculum, and the implementation of evidence-based instructional practices and will be the lead responsible for master schedule development. The DoI has a central role in School Improvement Plan development and implementation. Instructional Coach- All school leaders are expected to coach teachers. The DoI will be responsible for coaching teachers to develop and strengthen the use of evidence-based instructional practices through: Individual coaching cycles with teachers (both teachers with significant support needs as well as “good to great” teacher development) Facilitation, co-facilitation or other support of school’s grade-level professional learning communities and content-driven vertical professional learning communities Building Level Assessment Coordinator- The DoI will be responsible for serving as the point of contact for SBEZ and SBCSC assessment updates, training and requirements. The DoI will be the primary communicator of relevant information to other administrators as well as teachers and other instructional staff and will collaborate with others in their building to schedule assessments and ensure assessments are conducted with fidelity. (DoI will not be scheduled to conduct assessments directly and instead will provide oversight and lead problem solving regarding testing schedules and assessment administration) MTSS-A Coordinator- The DoI will ensure processes are implemented with fidelity to identify student needs, collect and analyze progress monitoring data and problem solve student needs Tutoring and Intervention Lead- Serve as Liaison with district to support tutoring implementation and support Additional Dean of Instruction’s Responsibilities for 2023-2024 School Year TAG (High Ability) Designee- The DoI will monitor and ensure compliance policies related to Talented and Gifted (High Ability) students Instructional Staff Lead- Provide support and oversee instructional components for staff that directly support instruction (Subs, Intervention Teachers) Immediate Supervisor: Building Principal Hours: Generally, 7:30 to 4:00 pm or 8:00 to 4:30pm; evening and weekend hours may be required at times Anticipated Start Date: August 2024 Physical Demands: Primary functions require sufficient physical ability and mobility to work in an office; dexterity of hands and fingers to operate a computer keyboard and other technologies and office equipment, sitting, standing and walking for extended periods of time; kneeling; bending at the waist; lifting; pushing; pulling and carrying equipment, supplies and materials weighing up to 25 pounds; repetitive hand movement and fine coordination to use a computer keyboard; emotional stability to work effectively under pressure and to keep all aspects of the job under control; hearing and speaking to exchange information in person or on the telephone; seeing to read; prepare and assure the accuracy of documents. *This position is subject to grant funding.
